The remnants of human civilization are threatened by gigantic creatures breeding beneath the earth. You must control powerful mechs from the future to hold off this alien threat. Each attempt to save the world presents a new randomly generated challenge in this turn-based strategy game from the makers of FTL: Faster Than Light.

This is actually one of my favourite games. On the face of it it’s turn-based combat, but the gimmick is that you know exactly what every enemy is going to do on their turn so you need to use yours to redirect their attacks or kill them first.

The roguelike elements of picking up random weapons and upgrades will be very familiar to anyone who played FTL, and much like its predecessor this game is very hard. It’s rare I’d suggest this, but I would strongly recommend playing on easy until you get your first win because I found even normal to be prohibitively difficult when you’re still learning. Once you’ve got the hang of it though it is possible to play a perfect game on hard.

I always describe it as a puzzle game wearing a strategy game’s hat. I love it too, great core mechanic and the variety of maps, enemies and PCs is enough for a huge amount of replayability.

Just a shame I’m not very good!

The secret is to spend an hour thinking about every move until you finally see a way to avoid damage!
