Twitter filed a lawsuit against the Center for Countering Digital Hate. “Despite our continued progress, the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) and its backers have been actively working to assert false and misleading claims encouraging advertisers to pause investment on the platform. X is a free public service funded largely by advertisers. Through the CCDH’s scare campaign and its ongoing pressure on brands to prevent the public’s access to free expression, the CCDH is actively working to prevent public dialogue,” the company said in a blog post Monday.

“Musk and his legal team, led by attorney Alex Spiro at Quinn Emanuel, have engaged in an aggressive campaign to intimidate, bully, and silence CCDH,” the organization said in a statement released Monday. “While Elon Musk proclaims to be a ‘free speech absolutist,’ his actions against CCDH show the lengths he will go to silence those who seek to hold him to account.”

They are whining about the fact that an anti-hate organization… browsed twitter. They didn’t hack them. They didn’t do anything scary. They just used the publicly available data to make a report. If that is illegal then simply browsing twitter is also illegal. It’s a public website.

**’X is a free public service funded largely by advertisers.‘

What do you think this changes about the discussion in any way? X being ‘free’ or not matters not one whit while they platform nazis and white supremacists.

‘the CCDH gained access to X’s data without Brandwatch’s authorization.’**

This seems like a problem for Brandwatch to address with the CCDH more than an issue for X. X’s concern should be whether or not they’re hosting nazis and white supremacists. If X has any concern, it ultimately comes to the poor way Brandwatch secured the data.

It’s not a public service. It is a service offered to the public. That is something completely different.

That’s how defense of this stuff always works. They subtly change the meaning of commonly accepted words and terms. “Service available to the public” becomes “public service” and “Nazis are good” becomes “an opinion” instead of hate speech.

The real problem here is that Twitter/X user’s data can be easily revealed by organizations.

The publicly posted data being easily revealed by organizations is a problem?
