The last time the Dems had a filibuster proof trifecta, it was for about 2 months and they passed Obamacare. The Repubs spent the next decade trying to break it. The Democrats have a lot of issues, but they are NOT the major problem here.
You mean the continuing resolution that would have caused a government shut down which Trump would have used to take more power and a meaningless symbolic vote?
Yes, but that would have affected virtually nothing Trump has done since gaining office again.
Can’t filibuster executive orders.
And yet they are still regularly wrong. Because statistics are probability, not certainty.
It’s new that they aren’t even pretending to play by the same rules
At least for the rich and powerful
The law is clear. It doesn’t matter if it’s politically convenient or likely to succeed. If the President breaks the law, which Trump clearly has, they must be impeached.
Just this past weekend my mom said she was struggling to decide whether or not to get the shingles vaccine. She was afraid she would get chickenpox from it. Her doctor told her that’s impossible and I told her the doctor was right. In the end she said she is getting it first thing this week.
Palestinians descended from the Bronze Age inhabitants of the Levant. Israelites later emerged from the Canaanite people (who are also strongly genetically tied to Palestinians) a thousand years later.
Probably radiocarbon dating?
This isn’t the only place this has happened. More info here.
It’s like Trump broke all the ten commandments and now he’s trying to break all the Amendments.
I think the government has learned a lot about suppression of protests in the last 20 years.
Find (or create) an excuse to call the protest violent, apply less-than-lethal weapons liberally, and subvert the message of the protest to turn the public against it.
Equality was an ideological principle woven throughout the Constitution, but it was selectively granted to only a few. That doesn’t mean we should throw out the idea of equality because it wasn’t applied correctly. In the same way we shouldn’t throw out firearm restrictions because they were applied selectively.
Oh yeah, I know. I know it’s not a common take, but I am pro open carry, but anti concealed carry. I feel safer when I know who is and isn’t armed.
Traditionally (as in the decades after the 2nd was written) all concealed carrying of weapons was illegal. It was also not uncommon for law enforcement to disarm people when they entered town. Heller is a terrible ruling because it claims to hold to history while ignoring historical norms that are inconvenient for the pro-gun lobby.
As much as being out or outed can put you at risk in many places in the world, I don’t think there is an obligation to put yourself at risk by being an activist. That being said, there are ways to provide aid to those in need besides activism.
IIRC, the Democrats used the filibuster more during Trump’s first term than the Republicans did during Obama’s second term. It is a highly flawed tool, but it does have its uses. Yeah, we are going to be able to pass more things we want, but so will the opposition.
I think we should get rid of the filibuster because it has allowed the Executive to take more power. That doesn’t mean it will be entirely positive. It might even be a net negative. Remember that we got rid of the filibuster for supreme court appointments and that is what allowed the Republicans to take a supermajority there.
