The official renter ban is a bit of a loophole - a lot of Bay Area counties are taking over old federal properties (Navy and Coast Guard bases, former superfund sites, etc) and turning them into housing. Federal laws prevented having firearms in these places (for obvious reasons, can’t bring a gun to a navy base lol). During the “transition” period where the housing is partially built but not completed, there’s typically a joint ownership with the gun rules carried over from when it was purely federal property. The municipality could get these rules removed, but they really don’t want to. It’s a benefit to them.

But more typically, you’ll see every large landlord in the area ban firearms as a part of the lease agreement, with the tacit encouragement of local governments. So it’s not law, but you still can’t really have one.

I mean, it does sound reasonable if you don’t know the stats. Which I don’t.

The SF law (that’s where I live), various “may issue” concealed carry permit policies, extra taxes, local ordinances banning renters from having firearms in the home or in their car, it’s just a litany of small encroachments that add up to great difficulty.

That’s the state level laws, but many local jurisdictions are much more restrictive.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved that movie. But when I grew up a bit I realized that in the pivotal moment, the military would ABSOLUTELY have gunned down that crowd of people wearing masks. It’s happened before, a lot.

Making men’s spaces online specifically has the dual problem of being attacked by both misogynists and radical feminists. It’s a lot of work and a lot of hate to deal with, so they don’t pop up a lot. But yes, they do exist, there’s a semi-active menslib community on lemmy for example. I think that one veers way too heavily into the “us men are really awful aren’t we?” feminist takes, personally; the reddit one was a lot better.

Man, I have been in SO MANY internet arguments where I am simultaneously arguing against a woman that yes, men have problems, while also arguing against a man that no, those problems are not worse on the whole than women have.

Back when the whole “bear in the woods” thing was going around misogynists would try to jump in and support me.

Men don’t always isolate by choice. There’s a large cultural aversion to creating and sustaining male-only spaces, and that aversion comes from all sectors.

Every college campus has a women’s club but if you try making a men’s club you’ll probably get reprimanded.

Well I would definitely put blahaj down as a queer-focused space rather than a women-focused space. It’s inclusive, women are welcome, but the community there is very much about queer issues.
