How did volunteers who run reddit’s for-profit business for them for free end up equated with landed gentry?
Yeah, Linux is just not that accessible tbh. I know maaayyyybe a little more than average about computers, meaning I know how to follow tutorials lol.
I installed Ubuntu onto my laptop because it was getting old and slow. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the speed. My laptop is fast as it was new. But, doing some of the simplest things is a nightmare to me. I spent an hour last night just trying to install AirVPN. Why do I have to go into terminal? Why can’t I just right click and install? Then when I finally got it installed I realized there’s no UI, so idk how to use it lol.
Given, I could learn. Nothing wrong with that. But the opportunity cost is low - I’m really not willing to give up that much for ? benefit.
Thank heavens for the Ubuntu app store
Yeah, the admins deserve all our support on this. Not only to protect themselves as server owners, but to stop the spread. Hopefully a longterm solution will be found soon
They did surgery on a grape
Not to mention employee protection/rights laws that don’t always apply to contractors
Taxi companies tend to be smaller, more locally owned businesses with actual employees instead of “contractors.” Why would we *not side with them?
Edit: missed an important word
I’d be curious to see which would be more practical: a decentralized version of Lyft/Uber powered by blockchain, or an employee-owned version of Lyft/Uber where workers keep all their earnings and pay a small portion for administrative fees to keep the app running.
Admittedly I’m always skeptical of blockchain’s ability to actually solve problems. But maybe it would have fewer infrastructural costs? Who knows
Honestly I find their behavior extremely disappointing. I grew up in a typical western household so I’ve been eager to learn about more leftist ideologies - but the way I’ve seen them engage has really turned me off. It takes effort to keep my mind open now.
That being said, I feel like a good step would be to consider banning the most hostile or shitposty communities. it won’t be a total fix, but hopefully it will help filter the noise from the substance. It could also maybe serve as a shot across the bow to show seriousness and commitment toward more moderation. I don’t think defederation is the current step - not unless they don’t change or improve
Damn dude, that was such a spot-on summary I feel like I don’t need to log in to lemmy for a month lol
