  • When you’re done savoring the smell of your own farts, think about what you said. You went from claiming many people care more about the dog than they do the human murder victims, then you jumped to saying people didn’t care about the humans at all. These are very different things.

Different people have different values, and these values are shaped by a variety of circumstances. I may not agree with these values or the reasoning behind them, but there are plenty of factors I can think of why some people who aren’t sociopaths may have a reaction like this to stories like these.

In the end, it matters to me more that people care in this situation than why they care. Holier than thou purity testing only divides us further, so trying to understand where people are coming from before you generalize and write them off is a much better strategy if we want more allies to help in this mess. We’re going to need all we can get.

I’ve worked in animal rescues, shelters, and at a veterinary clinic. I’ve interacted with probably hundreds of pit bulls in my life over the years, and I’ve fostered more than ten of them. My fosters were all lovely with me, other people (especially children), my resident dogs, and all my cats. One went on to become a service dog for a little boy with autism, and my last foster is now a support dog for a young adult with severe autism.

While I have met some pits with behavioral issues and different types of aggression, they are few and far between. There are many, many other breeds that have a higher percentage of individuals with dangerous behavioral issues than pit bulls.

I would encourage anyone who has such patently false ideas about these dogs to volunteer at their local shelter and get some actual experience with bully breeds. If that’s too big an ask, have a conversation with the vet techs and doctor assistants at your veterinary clinic, and ask them which breeds they have the most difficulty with during appointments. It won’t be put bulls. There is a reason that very few people that work with dogs share your opinion.

  • I’m a pet product specialist for a pet food manufacturer. I respond to customer emails, calls, and chats about our products. This could mean assisting pet owners in selecting products based on their pets’ unique medical or physiological needs, answering nutritional questions, handling complaints, and more. In my downtime I work on reference materials for the rest of the team, continuing education on animal nutrition (my last class was on avian flu in pet foods), and prepare promotional materials for expos and trade shows.

On light days we do a lot of sharing memes, shit talking in group chat, dicking around on the Internet, and finding other creative ways to fuck off.

  • I’m having similar feelings. ICE is building an “office building” near me that conveniently has underground tunnels to transport office workers and high fences to keep these workers from leaving. I can’t tolerate this.

The protesters in Hong Kong years ago inspired me to look into supportive tactics. Putting yourself in a position to help others helped me, and it may help you. Learning resistive tactics like combatting crowd suppression tactics was especially inspiring. We have to be ready to resist however we can.

  • I am a big fan of sparkling wine, and one of my favorite mid-range bottles (of legit champagne) is Veuve. A cheaper option I enjoy is Friexent’s Blac de Blancs.

At least in my area, the prices have stayed pretty static. Whiskies that I enjoy have gone up, some more than others. The drop in alcohol sales definitely makes sense when it comes to this change, but I don’t necessarily believe that rising prices of champagne and sparkling wine is entirely at fault here.

  • I can only speak to my own experience. Most of their communities I’ve seen are not a place where nuanced views are appreciated. I saw a particularly 4Chanesque take where a guy was trashing a girl he dated for her interest in astrology. He was more than fine supporting it and humoring it while they were together. Once dumped, though, he had to use it as an example of everything he had to be tortured with in the relationship.

I had a couple of things to say about that kind of attitude, but the whole of my response centered around learning to pick partners who are aligned with our own values and goals. They banned me because of my username. I have no idea why, other than making assumptions about my views and values in a negative way. A peep into my post history should suggest otherwise, but anyway.

I don’t have a lot of respect for people with strong views that are sensitive about having them challenged. It isn’t a good faith argument.
