I’ve gone with PopOs. Ubuntu based so well supported. They’ve been around for a while now so they won’t disappear over night. Gaming just works.

I was on Nobara for a while and really liked it. but while glorious eggroll is the goat, I don’t want to put my DE in the hands of a single person.

Since swapping the I’ve experienced one game crashing freeze (which I hope was a one off), and when screen sharing BG3 over discord it slows the game down to a crawl. But I blame discord for this one, as its fine when streaming from OBS.

Yeah the issue is I wouldn’t want to compromise quality too much. But I might just start saving up now for whatever valve is cooking up next :) Another issue with using a quest is that you have to run the occulus app (when wired), eating up some of that sweet precious VRAM.

I got a Quest 3 that I use with a USB-c cable. Price is great but having to fiddle around with video compression settings on top of all other VR settings has proven to be a bit tedious. I’m still trying to figure out what pcvr headset to go for that won’t complete drain my bank account (there’s probably tons of used ones out there).

Glad to hear VR is possible and getting better on Linux though!

Oh what’s your Linux setup for VR? I thought it was very janky still? Once I get my storage server set up I was planing on moving fully to windows except for a small drive for VR titlea.

Thanks for asking, made me go look again. I had mixed up Lemmy.world owner Ruud and the creator of Lemmy itself and admin of lemmy.ml. Ruud seems chill, lemmy.ml less so.

There’s a bit of choice paralasys when joining Lemmy. Even if you know how the fediverse works you won’t have knowledge of the culture and relationships of different instances.

I joined Lemmy.world because it advertises itself as the vanilla flavour of the fediverse, so it makes it an easy pick for someone like me who didn’t quite understand how it all hangs together.

But I do agree with you, and I’m looking to migrate after some concerning things have come up about the lemmy.world owner.

All I want is to remove the mandatory google search bar and calendar/weather widget at the top of the home screen on my pixel.

While alot of the third party launchers I’ve seen look cool and functional, in this case I would love just more simple one.

Though historically you could say the same with old written text, they could also be copied but humans are lazy and not very good at future proofing. One day the Vatican library will go up in smoke and we’ll have once again lost some of our history.

I’m just wondering about potentially temporal data. I know everything will change eventually, but I’d feel responsible to keep info such as timetable data up to date. I wouldn’t want someone missing their bus because I gave the times as they were couple of months ago. Do you know how this is dealt with in the community?

Someone else in the thread recommended mapscomplete, which seems to have a bunch of topics, with pre arranged written questions when adding an item. I assume streetcomplete does something similar? And if I were to use open street map directly I assume I wouldn’t get these questions and it would instead be all mamual?

Last time I checked codium out it couldn’t support the vs code marketplace/plugin repo. Is this still the case? I should take another look at it either way though :)

Edit: I answered my own question by reading some more comments. So looks like there are alternative plugin registries. I’ll definitely have a go at switching now.

Just to add my two pennies (that’s a saying, right?), I do use VS code as my default text editor. Professionally and for other projects in C++/C# I use the full fat visual studio. But for scripting, config editing, hex files, todo lists and such I use Code.

I’ve never been much of a person who needs to shave off every possible second in my workflow with macros and plugins, my brain is just not fast enough to out pace my hands, and the command palette does pretty much all I could wish for.

I of course wish it was fully open source, but for being the only Microsoft product I daily it isn’t too bad.

I think they mean no consequences as in friends and family won’t have any upsetting reaction, work will still be the same, and so on. Like picking male or female in a game, it rarely matters what you pick, the game just rolls with it.

I think the situation here on lemmy is pretty comparable to early reddit. People forget it started out as mostly a nerdy programmer centric site as well, and then grew from there. It’s a bit jarring to see people here insisting on artificially creating communities and pushing/guiliting people into posting more just to bring the numbers up. “the narwhal bacon’s at midnight” (although it was always cringe) started because reddit was a niche site less known than 4chan to begin with, so it was just a nonsensical dog whistle.

Do I miss the focused subreddits around specific topics? Sure, but I also think they will come naturally with time if lemmy survives just as they did with reddit. And the whole reason we’re here today to begin with is because of an unsatiable hunger for growth.
