I would totally read that book
I would totally read that book
I’m all for getting into old school tech, I even like to browse neocities.org on occasion just for the hit of nostalgia for the old web rings. I never got into newsgroups though, and I’m wondering what reasons you might use that instead of something like Lemmy, Mastodon etc?
Apart from the piracy side, I know all about that already lol
This is the kind of alarmist media that cripples people with anxiety and leads to learned helplessness. We want to be giving people hope for change, not taking it away.
This is fucking amazing
I like the idea of calling it ex-twitter. I came up with the idea when I was having a shower… Hang on… there’s a community for that! brb
Exactly! Although I find dishwashing detergent dries out your skin a lot more, so I wouldn’t try using that lol. Shampoo has a pH closer to your skin than a bar of soap, so is really quite well suited for it.
My guess to the biggest reason not to do this is safety - if somebody is being electrocuted, you want to be able to pull the cord out of the wall as quickly as possible to maximise their chance of survival.
I just buy cheap $2 bottles of shampoo and use it for my whole body. Cheaper than shower gel, and I’ve been doing it for over 5 years with no problems. It’s all soap, right?
I can’t remember the details now, but I tried running Ubuntu on my desktop first but I had trouble with some software not running. Then I tried Arch, and it just worked 🤷♂️
5 years now and it’s still running fine. Any problems I have are fixed with a quick google, and maybe a copy and a paste lol
nah totally off the mark. I may be a 39 Linux user, but I work in Ag science!
tbf they said “older”, not “old”
True, but seeing it laid out like this can at least help you to realise why you’re not able to have a reasonable debate with someone in a particular topic. and even be able to call them out on it. Whether they listen or not, it can at least save you some time and cut the conversation off shorter than you may otherwise do
Yeah I find myself often drawn into these arguments that in retrospect feel more like dick swinging contests than genuine arguments. It seems more difficult in the moment to realise when you’re too busy trying to craft the perfect retort
Sadly I fear you’re right. It is nice while it lasts though, it takes me back to the early days of reddit
Wow thanks that’s the best breakdown I’ve read! I’ve been torrenting for maybe 15 years and used to collect all the shows I watched until one day my external hard drive died and I lost everything :(
Nowadays I just delete a show after I’ve watched it, so Idon’t think I’ll worry about making my own server yet. I’ve had a look into it and think I’ll start off with NZB Geek as indexer and Frugal Usenet as a server. Drunken Slug seems pretty popular too but they don’t seem to be open for registrations atm
Can you recommend any good walk-throughs for noobs? I didn’t even know you needed a server lol
I’ve looked into doing that myself before, but it seemed like a lot of work and research to get it set up
Cool, I just installed Thunderbird and am giving it a go.
