For all of the Linux and FOSS nerds on Lemmy, I don’t think I’ve seen one make a guide on how to have good digital stewardship of oneself. Syncthing sounds freaking awesome. Still feel like there’s a barrier to entry for me though
When fully capable adults do stupid things, like campaigning to a voting base as grotesque as Trump’s, I blame them for doing it.
Democrats, or at least those in their establishment bubble either on TV, on podcasts, at the DNC, or on the congressional floor, will believe anything they want to that’ll pass on blame and hold to a superiority complex that they’re never wrong. Power corrupts and all that.
Inspiration is absolutely required when you outside of the representative Democracy have lost hope in the economy, society, or planet. Apathy is much more destructive than idiocy, even when the latter is in favor of fascism. Apathy is what lets fascism and idiocracy prosper. There needs to be a counterforce should we keep the alternative at bay.
Democrats did not take Trump’s potential to do the above seriously enough, either in his rhetoric to espouse fascism or cast mis- and disinformation. And now we have to deal with their failure.
Doesn’t matter.
Self-interest matters. What politicians will do for voters matters. That day old potato salad may be better than Trump, but it’s not at all inspiring.
If Democrats really took fascism as a threat, they would have activated Tim Walz and his views and pushed as fast and as hard as they could with the time they had to make the most progressive campaign since Obama’s.
But they went after the base who would have voted for a fascist anyways.
This is Democrats’ own doing. Sorry.
And why did Donald Trump win the popular vote? Because he gave concessions to his base and catered to their needs and wants? Because a politician actually fought for the interests of their constituents?
What about Democrats? Did they do any of that? Hell no. I blame Democrats.

There is one group of people that led us to this point: Democrats themselves. And by Democrats, I mean those in power, delegates, podcast hosts, and the ones supposedly “leading” the party. Not the electorate.
They are the ones that wished Biden would be able to make it to a second term, when the first presidential debate clearly showed otherwise. They are the ones that pushed un-Democratic policies in hopes of winning over a base they’ve never captured: Republicans. They are the ones that dropped the ball on one of the greatest feats of Kamala’s campaign that could have sent her over the finish line: Tim Walz and a progressive agenda.
Thank you for pointing out how Democrats are cannibalizing their allies, the Left, when we were the only sound ones calling out inadequacies with Kamala’s campaign.

Most of the leftists I know voted for Kamala.
And I love how Democrats’ first move after losing is to blame said leftists. We were the only ones calling out the bad moves of Kamala’s campaign from the beginning and warning what might happen if she didn’t adopt a Walz ticket (or mostly a Walz ticket).
Democrats did this to themselves. It’s the reason why they kept supporting a corpse of a candidate with Joe Biden for so long until the first presidential debate, and it’s also the reason why Hillary was picked over Bernie in 2016 at the DNC.
Leftists weren’t the issue. Democrats’ own willingness to ignore what was happening right in front of them was the issue.

I blame Kamala Harris and her botching her campaign. She had amazing momentum at the start, then slowly threw it all away, instead politicking to small businesses and Republicans instead of workers and their own base: Democrats.
Dems are chasing Repubs, so either party winning won’t really change this fact.
With Dems we’re delaying this outcome. With Repubs we’re accelerating it.

External visibility and discoverability is still an issue
What do we mean by effective?
One might say that the effectiveness of reddit is its niche communities that allow each and every user to find somewhere they feel like they belong. Not only this, the complexity of niches gives rise to interesting information that bubbles to the surface and front page of the platform where more users have exposure. One might contribute this to the quantity of users on reddit’s platform, and also the discoverability of the platform itself.
Personally, I think Lemmy is decently effective now aside from the saturation in political and tech news and memes. I think things will get better as for-profit companies squeeze more and more people out of their platforms, and people look to alternatives rather than dropping their digital consumption habits.
I do think discoverability is still a downfall of Lemmy, from both internal and external views. I want to better find /communities from inside the platform and via a search engine should my use and value of Lemmy increase. Wonder how development has gone on this front.
Ultimately, the FOSS nature of Lemmy is one of its greatest strengths. It can improve over time, ripping features from the big players without the destiny of being killed eventually if not profitable. I think this characteristic alone gives rise to the potential of Lemmy to be very effective over time.

You can use FireFox and set your default search engine to Ecosia’s. Best of both world’s.
There is also a FF extension called Search For Trees that defaults to Google’s search engine instead of Ecosia/Bing where you don’t have to pre-load each search with #g, unlike Ecosia. The Google search in this extension is a little wacky though so not perfect. Search For Trees donates to Trees For the Future btw.

Friendly reminder that the Fediverse is awesome, and you have the power to control the content in your feed not only by which subs you subscribe to or instances you make an account on, but also which you can block - including specific users if it comes to that. Of course, instance admins can do the same, and if that happens to content you want to see, you can always make a new account on a different instance and see everything.
It takes a little to understand the Fediverse structure, but imo it’s one of the best ways social media can be structured.
There have been steady and iterative advancements.
Steady imo is a synonym for constant, and revolutionary breakthroughs can be subjective if referring to industry or academia.

Depends on how you define “constant”. Battery prices have been falling year over year, no thanks to technological improvements.
If we’re referring explicitly to Academia and R&D, then OP is correct. You’re main point is that these huge breakthroughs haven’t affected the market, but OP isn’t arguing that.

The QR code sounds super easy which is a good sign. I guess most of my complaints rest with what a full FOSS and pro-privacy cyber-system would look like overall. I come from a Windows world so I have those household names stuck in my head, like Word, Outlook, etc. I guess I’m really looking for a guide that has a 1:1 for the entire OS from Windows to Linux, and maybe more if it improves people’s lives. Thinking Jellyfin and Bitwarden and all those purpose-driven applications.
At this point I don’t know what I don’t know, and I just wish that some of the awesome devs on Lemmy would post a guide to all of this, soup to nuts style. Maybe one day
