Phages are pretty cool, but bacteria do develop phage resistance as well. Phages also can evolve to evade those resistances, in a co-evolutionary battle, but also Phages can still be seen as antigens to our own body.

To avoid reading the whole article: Antibiotics no-longer worked for a patient in 2020 that developed an infection after needing immunosuppression for treatment of an autoimmune condition, so they tried phage therapy.

Within 24 hours of receiving phage therapy, the patient’s blood infection had resolved and she could go home, where she continued the phage and antibiotic combination. She developed a few short-lived breakthrough infections, which indicated the bacteria was getting around the therapy, so the researchers found an additional phage that targeted her bacteria.

With the addition of the new phage, the patient was blood infection-free for four months and able to travel out of state for a for a family beach vacation.

However, just over six months after starting phage therapy, the blood infection returned, and the phage-antibiotic combination was thought to be no longer effective. The patient died in 2022.

In order to learn why the infections recurred despite the combination being previously effective, laboratory testing revealed that the patient’s immune system had likely activated in a way that blocked the phages from attacking the bacteria.

I’m not disagreeing with the benefits of Phage Therapy, just that it isn’t likely a magic solution all on it’s own, and can still suffer similar resistance issues as antibiotics have. I’m a fan of multipronged attack vectors, to reduce the chance of developing progressive resistances (ie. wipe out the whole colony), and the more tools we have for that, the better.

Wasn’t there a video a while back of a presentation that OOP was created as a joke or something, and the person was surprised people were taking it seriously. Might have been advertised as the creator or OOP.

I took the video as a joke anyways, not a serious thing, but who knows. I don’t even remember if it was OOP, or some other paradigm, or language, or who knows what else.

If anyone could find/link to it, I’d love to watch it again, but I’m having no luck; so my memory may be faulty.

And there’s also KivyMD after you learn base Kivy, that adds more widgets with the intent of following Google’s Material Design spec.

I’ve seen red or blue marble varieties. I think I’ve owned both, have bought like 5 of these over the years.

Currently using just a regular optical mouse, because it came with the keyboard, and is bound to the same usb plug, but I think I have one somewhere.

I project I keep up on uses Discord for chat, help, and announcements, but…

They maintain a full website for documentation, and use github for bug reports, issue tracking, project discussion, other project management.

I like discord being a part of the community, but I can cant imagine people making it the project management, or documentation tool.

I get people’s argument for results not coming up from the #help discord channel when searching Google, but I’m fine with how active the help channel is, and how searchable discord is in this case.

For those having trouble filtering to a specific channel:

In the past I would get full server (or multi-server) search. Its not happening now, but how I got it to focus:

Click inside the message input box like you are typing a message, then hit Ctrl+F. That would send me to the search box with “in #channel-name” to filter for only said channel.

I have not kept up on antibiotic resistance research, or phages in recent years.

I do recall a number of years ago, I believe in the US, someone scooping up pond and garden soil samples looking for new phages.

A quick search though, does show work on “phagemids”; the following article does mention that phages can cause harm to the human host by releasing harmful toxins in the bacteria when cell lysis is performed (potentially causing sepsis, or death), as well as bacteria do also develop resistance to phages over time.

They will, but there is also the chance that in gaining that new resistance, they may give up a different resistance, or become less lethal.

That’s the hopeful side of things; unfortunately, it is not uncommon for bacteria to develop resistance to a full combination of antibiotics over time, but I can be hopeful.
