You seem to be ignoring that Assange either knowingly or unknowingly risked peoples’ lives, people who had often given those lives into great risk in service of their country.

When the leaks first happened, I was supportive of Wikileaks (a natural position for an anti-war person like me). Later, when it was revealed that there had been no or little due diligence to ensure the information had been vetted and scrubbed, I realized how extreme it can be on both ends of the political spectrum.

Stop trying to paint this with some large political brush.

Assange is not a hero. The US government is not innocent.

If people understood germ theory, it wouldn’t be an issue. Instead, we spend a lot of time in high school biology on hydras, for example. Hydras are cool, reproduction by budding is weird, but maybe that time would have been better spent on some history of plagues and their impact on society?

With better education half our population would not be so easily manipulated into bad choices.

It seems you don’t deny the huge impact that being captured into slavery would have on you or your descendants, you just feel like race shouldn’t play a role now even though it was the primary motivator for the systemic crime. 🤷‍♂️

Like I said, I am not sure what the answer is, and I am not a lawyer, either. But as an everyday citizen, I can clearly see a large group was seriously wronged and their descendants appear to be suffering consequences of that to this day. How the law wants to talk about that and address it, I am not sure. But the reality is obvious.

Are we (me too) surprised pickahu-ing? We have been told mass migration was coming as part of climate change. You mix in economics and I am thinking this is just the beginning if we don’t start to honestly address our issues.

Do we have solid genealogical records in this country for the enslaved population and their descendants?

I mean, you say the right way to do it is just use that, so I assume it should just be no big deal to check if someone is an heir, right?

Or is there no chance such a system exists and is it far more equitable to try to disperse the money more widely in the hopes you don’t overlook someone who deserves it, even if you give some money to those who don’t?

I am not sure what the right answer here is, but your proposal seems like it isn’t based in pragmatic reality.
