Dude Socrates was convinced that reading and writing would ruin everyone’s memory who grew up with it. Whining about <innovation> somehow handicapping the next generation by making them “too dependent on technology” or whatever and couching it in reasonable-sounding terms is as old as language, and time always makes fools of those who indulge in that sort of masturbatory delusion. who the hell calls rugby “rugger”? that’s even worse than “soccer”.

1. This is foosball.

2. The sport with the egg is “gridiron football”, we call it “football” for short for the same reason other countries call association football “football” for short, it’s the most popular variant here.

3. We don’t call it “American football” because that’s not what it’s called, you lot say that because of point 2. Nobody is going to say “European football” because that’s not what it’s called either.

4. The word “soccer” was imported from the UK (seriously that word is british as hell, you really think we came up with that shit?), and we use it for reasons outlined in points 2 and 3, and also because “european football” is inaccurate, tiresome, and stupid sounding.

5. This is the first and only time I’ve ever heard of rugby union football being referred to as “ruggers”, I never thought I’d read a dumber-sounding word than soccer but you’re just full of surprises today. For some reason i was imagining one of the replies was the same person, this was in error.

that’s a matter of dialect, both spellings are widely used and recognized as correct by english speakers the world over, versus “anglification” being entirely made up by one joker trying to flex how smart they are.

as an aside I really don’t understand the pissing contest over minor spelling variations between the two major dialects of English (a large part of which, a devoted pedant must note, is merely bastardizations of French words), what gets me is stuff that’s the same word for totally different things depending on where you are like chips, biscuit, thong, napkin, pants, etc.
