I’ve recently had so many random freezes of the system, hangs on shutdown, panics on shutdown, freezes in system updates, that hard reset became a thing I did several times a day. Yet there were no systemd logs, nothing in dmesg, literally zero information on what happened.

I was skeptical in blaming Nvidia because at this point it became a Linux chiche, but then I started to switch to integrated graphics (disabling dGPU) and all of the problems miraculously went away.

30℅ regular church attendance is still crazy, blows my European mind. I personally don’t think I have ever met a person who attends it even once a year nor I ever knew of such people through friends.

I’ve upgraded to Pixel 7 last year to run GrapheneOS. Honestly it was a very underwhelming upgrade. My 2019 Oneplus 7T is still kicking running LineageOS, could go back any second and not notice.

Also it seems like very few actually read the post beyond the title? The problem is not lemmy.world banning the piracy community, they have the right to do so, that’s how federation works. The problem is them making a promise to make announcements about such bans in advance, but they instead did it quietly in the background again.

That’s actually very ironic, the game needs about half an hour to get you hooked and yet so many people quit it beforehand. You’ll understand what I mean when you play it

Recently went on Reddit and laughed hysterically at the amount of religious propaganda I saw in this format. Example:

I’m on my early 20s, and used to take around 10 seconds to read an analog clock. Fully digital mind. Bought an analog wrist watch this summer and merely 1-2 months into wearing it I started understanding it instantaneously and all of “half past” type phrases click immediately now.

There’s a larger problem though, Google both owns and controls AOSP. Of course, chances of them making it closed or introducing their proprietary services into it are extremely small, but they still are the captain who steers the ship.

If they’ll decide to embed AI (in some open source form), many derivatives like Graphene and LOS may have to suck it and follow through as the more you change your fork away from source code, the harder it becomes to maintain for small team of enthusiast devs.

Is there additional reading I can do on the topic? I’ve googled but found nothing but concerns from Nato officials that Russia could engage in seabed sabotage. This comment is universally praised so I guess it’s some universal knowledge I missed. What are some instances when they did it?

Off topic to the off topic. OS masterminds out there, does rootkit anti-cheat translates to Linux over Proton? I assume not? If Proton is not originally run as root, it shouldn’t be able to elevate its privileges, correct?

Yep, that’s exactly why in the end of my comment I say that I currently believe a combination of Github+Discord to be best. Github for bug reporting, Discord if you want to socialize with the community, that’s what it does best

Can’t you do everything you’ve listed on github though? Report bugs on issues tab, ask questions on discussions tab, following up is easy. Everything is also indexed by search engines and can be looked up later on.

While I understand why FOSS community hates Discord, I don’t know an alternative that is better at everything.

Discord’s main problems:

• Not FOSS / Privacy respectful
• Hard/Impossible to index/search for data and organize tech support

However alternatives we have are not ideal either:

1. Old-school web forums
   • Great for info archival / organized tech support
   • Separate accounts for every one of them, different sets of newsletters / email notifications. Basically, to efficiently be active on several forums you have to manually log in to each on regular basis and check what’s new
   • Due to slower pace of communication, it’s harder to just log in and “hang out” with community, everybody is more of a pen pal.

2. FOSS messaging applications (e.g. Matrix since that’s what most use)
   • Info archival is even worse then on Discord. Every time I tried to search for anything useful on Matrix I would give up due to poor results and HUGE delays for every search
   • Because most communities use a single Matrix chat, it’s a huge disorganized mess for any communication and tech support. There’s often 2-3 concurrent conversations in a single room and some just stop abruptly due to it getting confusing to keep up
   • it’s FOSS and Private, though

Feel free to downvote me for this, but I think that Github for support & issue tracking and Discord for community hang out spot is currently the lesser evil approach until better Foss tools arrive

Mine was a point-click quest written in visual basic that taught Russian alphabet. I was 2-3 years old, playing while sitting on my father’s lap. Apparently this created some core memories since once I was 15-17 I found it and still remembered every dialogue word-to-word

Interesting how OP and some people in the comments really liked Pillars of Eternity, and I tried to play it for probably fifth time, and still found it a huge slog. Forced myself to play it for 5ish hours, and despite being an RPG fan, found zero interest in any of the setting or characters, this time giving up on the game forever :/

Not a hot take, I keep saying the same thing in different threads. I was not able to switch to Linux for years before I understood that I have problems with Gnome not with Linux itself, tried KDE and given I was migrating from Windows it clicked immediately.

After you gain some experience, DE becomes mostly irrelevant, but it is crucial for starting off in an unfamiliar environment.
