I mean, yeah somewhat, I’m just pointing out the idiocy of asking that question in a place specifically designed to talk about those places.

Also, regardless of how bad the sites as a whole are, making the transition fully is just plain too difficult, there are communities that haven’t moved and no matter if you are putting effort to have them here, you won’t be able to get a question about a program answered if there are 3 active people on a community

  • I sure love it when people use a single opinion to smear a person’s entire legacy, he was great not only for the tech stuff but his stance on scientific articles piracy and a lot of other stuff too.

I won’t say that that his opinion on cp is a great one (there is no doubt at least for me that distribution should always be illegal), but he wrote it as a 16 years old and it was guided due to his extremism for free speech over the internet, regardless, it’s not like he himself was an evil person distributing child pornography, to paint him as an overall shitty person for an opinion like this seems idiotic imo

This is q bit personal and maybe slightly unrelated, but it reminds me of when people defend non-offending pedos (as in they are attracted to children because yhey are born that way but have not offended, nor groomed, nor harmed a child) saying the stigma should be erased because that would allow us to actually help this people who constantly hide it, therefore reducing the harm to children. This position has unironically got me called a pedophile and a lot of horrible stuff over the internet, and I would draw parallels to this situation, no matter how you slice it this opinion should not be used singlehandedly to state he is someone that shouldn’t be respected. Especially since he is not defending the harm itself being done to children (as in the production of CP) which would still be a crime under his view. (Although distribution of course grows the market so it’s idiotic not to go after that too), but as I said, it’s a bad opinion but that doesn’t make him a bad person.

  • If this is why people want their instances to do it that’s mainly because lemmy hasn’t give appropriate tools at the user level to block entire instances unlike Kbin or Mastodon. (For now you can kind of block seeing them with apps like connect for lemmy, but someone from that instance would still be able to see and repply to your comments, or send you DMs)

As to why a user would want to block an instance and not just particular communities, there are many use cases, for example I didn’t want to bñur NSFW images but I didn’t want to see my frontpage filled with porn, so instead of blocking 10000 communities I just blocked 2 nsfw instances. There is also the culture fostered inside some communities that can lead them to become filled with alt right people or openly facistic rcho chamber which often harrass people, especially minorities.

I agree completely this request is dumb, but this doesn’t look like the community to have this discussion.

  • I really don’t think Lemmy is an instant replacement for reddit, nor should we expect it to be. (Even if it was to ever replace reddit it will take years)

Communities need to grow organically here and move people over by the content that gets produced, one shouldn’t really expect for entire subreddits to move over, it will always be a few people and from there it grows.

Hell take r/piracy for example which I think is one of the most “successful” migrations, some of the main mods created and instance and the same community here on Lemmy, they also promoted it heavily before leaving r/piracy to those that wanted to stay over at reddit. While the piracy community is pretty good and vibrant, it is not yhe same as it was in reddit both in volume and in content produced. I much prefer what it is here since it’s a lot less meme focused but the point I’m trying to make is that even if communities migrate here, the content is different, a lot of users that produced content won’t immediately come over and 8t will be its own thing.

At that point just making the community again here organically instead of relying on the og mods to vome over will probably have a similar effect.

  • I think the reason XMPP comes so much is because every single person read the post in /all, seriously I feel that is the biggest reason xmpp is the example being given instead of whenever microsoft has done it which is a lot more times and at least those we know definitely were done in bad faith because of the court cases as opposed to google abandoning XMPP.

Its fine to hate Meta and its fine to want the instance to be federated, but Im genuinely tired of people having this attitude of whomever isnt completely against federation with meta is either ignorant or dumb, like seriously a lot of people havent given proper thought of how EEE would look like and especially those saying “we need to defederate from anyone that hasnt defederated with meta” as a punitive measure are really tiring.

I probably will change my mastodon account if the instance doesnt defederate or at least make an alt account, but I dont believe some instances not defedarating will bring doom to the fediverse, that is not how this was designed to be. And for people to be so in arms here in lemmy that they are threatening and making all this big statements, well thats plain weird.
