At the risk of being a ‘works for me’ guy, I tried downloading and playing a couple random videos and it worked on version 2023.07.06. So hopefully yt-dlp is alive and kicking!

That does sound rad. Mostly my point was just about not having push-to-talk or toggle mute in the jitsi plug in, but I am far from deep on what can be done with the matrix protocol.
To explain more specifically. Matrix is federated, so you can talk to other matrix servers like Lemmy instances can. However, matrix not part of the Fediverse, which is built on activity pub, which lets Lemmy, Masotodon, Pixfed and others all talk to each other.
There is a jitsi widget for rooms though, so you can convert any group chat into a drop in/drop out voice room similar to discord’s voice rooms. The biggest struggle I have with it is that it defaults to asking about video every time, and there is no hotkey support. 🤮
It could be their goal is not to be folks primary casual browsing instance, so just being someone that is stopping in to hang out isn’t quite what they are looking for.
Yeah I don’t fully understand either. I think the point that folks were making was about port forwarding allowing for much better speeds? I don’t have Mullvad, but I know with my vpn my speeds are crippled when torrenting on it, so maybe others have similar issues with Mullvad without port forwarding.
I remember drama because mullvad blocked port forwarding and it messed up a lot of folks torrenting. Does anyone know if Mozilla allow port forwarding?
Googling a little, I might be misremembering limitations from a long time ago or from older IRC versions or something. Does it have async multi user rooms, reactions, and is it federated so I can stick to one log in? Not trying to be adversarial at all, these are just what I would miss if I didn’t use matrix and I haven’t really looked at xmpp since AIM days lol.
Why xmpp over matrix? Seems generally like older tech that doesn’t have modern chat features.
I don’t even know if I disagree with “big platforms” using activitypub. Like Tumblr integration could be cool, but fucking facebook? Eww
Which one are you?
Oh nice try government, I won’t fingerprint myself in a public comment like some kind of sucker 😏
Anyone know how this would effect things like yt-dlp or streaming with vlc? Might have just stop using my browser for youtube?
Thumbnails? Or maybe searching through find, which is not as straight forward as something like search in dolphin.
Also “name the file properly in the first place” is such an off putting mentality. I want my computer to simplify work by doing things for me, not need to properly catalog every random video because of the failures of my UI.
