I own the same model of car, and it tells you the car will shut off after an hour. As soon as you open the door, you get a big “car will automatically shut off in one hour” warning and cabin chime. It even pings your phone if you have the app installed.

There are specific requirements for being exempt from overtime, even for salaried employees. There are three big exemptions, and each one has multiple requirements; You need to meet ALL of the requirements for any exemption in order to be legally exempt. I’d advise you to check the requirements here, because employers regularly misclassify workers and lie through their teeth about it to avoid paying OT. Intentional misclassification is one of the most overt ways that employers steal wages, but also extremely common in many industries.
Also, there’s a blue-collar clause that says all manual labor positions are non-exempt. So if they’re dumb enough to write manual labor into your job description, you’re non-exempt no matter how highly paid you are.
And here’s a reminder that it’s actually illegal to volunteer at the same company you’re employed at. Specifically to prevent situations exactly like this, where employers attempt to pressure their employees into volunteering, so they don’t have to pay overtime. If you’re working for your employer, you’re required to be on the clock.
Given, that only works if the rules are actually enforced. And this administration has done a good job of dismantling agencies that would be enforcing this.
My guess is that the script ran repeatedly, even after a good connection was established. Telecom companies only billed whole minutes, so a call of 13:01 would be billed as 14 minutes. Or to put it simply, if her script made multiple calls every second, the library would get billed for multiple minutes per minute. If I made fifteen 1-second calls in a minute, I would get billed for 15 minutes of calls in that single minute.
Also, phone companies would typically bill a large flat fee for each long distance call. So making a ton of short calls was more expensive than a single long call. If her script was configured to reestablish the connection in between each upload (instead of simply starting it the once, then uploading multiple times), then the library would get billed a lot of those flat fees for each individual call.
I also found out the hard way that cell phone providers’ “free minutes” plans (back before virtually every phone plan had unlimited minutes) didn’t kick in if the call was started before the time. If your minutes were free after 8PM and you started a three hour call at 7:59, the entire call would be billed, instead of only the first minute.
Yeah, the unfortunate part about internet security is that everyone has to start somewhere. And that means there’s always a newbie making dumb mistakes that they don’t even realize are dumb. It’s not a personal failing, unless they fail to learn from it.

I suggest you read the article you actually posted, because it supports what I said. Whoever wins the state gets all 38 electoral votes. It’s not like a 51/49 split has the votes split. Whoever gets 51% wins all of the electoral college votes. The congressional districts are gerrymandered to hell, but that’s because they determine house reps. Just like I said.
Gerrymandering doesn’t factor into presidential elections, because presidential elections don’t use districts. Gerrymandering only affects local and state elections. It’s how all of the crazy house reps have rock solid seats, for instance. But on the presidential scale, it’s voter suppression and swing voters, combined with presidential candidates focusing their time in expected swing states to reach that magic 270 electoral college votes.
Our local and state elections are 100% gerrymandered, but the presidential doesn’t use districts. Instead, republicans have focused on suppressing blue votes. Things like shutting down voting locations in blue areas, so people in blue areas need to travel farther, and wait times at the remaining locations are 6-8 hours, instead of minutes. Making it illegal to hand out water to people waiting in line. Voter ID laws, to bar people who can’t afford the fees+time off work to get an ID. Plenty of others too, but those are the big ones. Usually they use the “ensuring the integrity of the election” messaging to justify it, but it’s really about eliminating blue votes.
Texas had more votes for Kamala than New York; Texas had 4.8M democrat voters, while New York only had 4.6M. Believe it or not, most states are fairly purple, and the elections largely depend on a small amount (less than 10%) of swing voters. Republican states have also largely relied on voter suppression to disenfranchise blue voters, rather than trying to grab the swing votes.
When you do frequent midnight alerts for missing elderly, people disable the alerts on their phone entirely.
I’m reminded of the time cops woke up the entire state of Texas at 5AM, to say a dude named Sam Altman shot at a cop near Amarillo. They issued a Blue Alert for the entire state. For reference, many Texans were more than an 8 hour drive away from where it happened. Yeah, shit like that gets emergency notifications muted.
It’s playing the game by the rules as written. If the Game Master is upset at a player for using their own rules against them, that’s the GM’s fault. I can’t begrudge a guy manipulating a mega corporation (in this case, manipulating Google/YouTube’s algorithms) for profit. He needs viewer retention to stay at the top of the algorithm, so that’s what he’s doing.
He has literally said that the MS Paint doodles aren’t meant to be super descriptive or helpful. He started doing it in his meetings at Blizzard, because he found that any visual aid was good at keeping executives’ attention. Whenever he had to do a presentation, he’d use MS Paint every few minutes to keep them focused.
And now he does the same with his viewers. He busts out MS Paint every few minutes, just to refocus the viewers and keep them engaged. It’s not to help with whatever he’s describing; it’s just to keep the viewers engaged, so he keeps making money off of them.
To his credit, at least he admits this. It’s not like he’s hiding his strategy. He just does whatever will push him to the top of the algorithms and keep viewers engaged.

Sure, there’s always the “time and place” consideration to be made. If you tried to start a fight every time someone disagreed with you, you’d never get anywhere in life. But that’s really a different discussion.
Yup, this is why allies are so important. It’s the ally’s job to be angry and belligerent when the targeted group can’t. When the targeted group needs to keep their head down, that’s when allies should be the loudest. The ally’s largest point is that they’re beyond reprisal, because they don’t belong to the targeted group.
If someone throws a slur at your friend, that friend may not be able to speak up out of fear of further harassment and/or retaliation. Also, any anger they show will be DARVO’ed around and used to paint them as the aggressor. It will be used to confirm any stereotypes that the bigot already holds; fascists and bigots regularly weaponize decorum, by saying/doing awful things to marginalized groups while pretending to be civil. Then when those people get angry, the fascist turns it around and makes the targeted group look unreasonable. When the victim needs to maintain decorum, that’s when the ally should step up.
A great example of this in action can be found here. Rep Sarah McBride is openly transgender, and Keith Self intentionally misgenders her during her introduction. Sarah throws back a quick “thank you Madam Chair” (misgendering Self) joke in response, but then leaves it at that. Rep William Keating quickly recognizes what is going on, and asks Self to repeat the introduction using McBride’s chosen pronouns. At this point, McBride steps back and doesn’t say anything else; Any anger or belligerence she shows will be used by Self to justify further marginalizing trans people. Self tries to come up with a loose explanation, but quickly flees the situation when it becomes obvious that Keating isn’t going to let the flimsy reasoning stand. Self immediately adjourns the meeting, but he only does this because Keating is the one pushing back; If McBride had been the one to push back, Self would have dug his heels in and used it to grab anti-trans soundbites for later campaigns.
