It actually reports about 27K monthly active users and is one of the more popular platforms on the fediverse.

lemmy indicates clearly liberapay is preferred . and it does seem to have an effect because patreon donations went down at some point while liberapay donations went up.

With that said liberapay fees are cited as being around 3.1% and maybe higher. some digital currencies are almost free (nano, ripple) and despite the hate you see i don’t see a rational reason not to offer them as an option.

For user tagging. see this . its implemented on the server side but not on the UI side. give it a thumbs up maybe it will help the developers prioritize it.

a little more then 24h into the campaign.

patreon increased from $871 to $1,138 (+30%).

liberapay rose from $301 to $393.66 (+30%).

I think it could have been improved further , the text could be a bit longer (I talked to Nutomic and few suggestion were kinda shortened too much IMO). but i think we can overall call the campaign a success. I realize we can tweak and experiment with this for far too long and without A/B testing we could be “fooled by randomness” and make the wrong choices. but we could measure how many people leave the page of the text before we expect them to finish reading to get a indication if it is too small or big. information beats speculation.

Anyway this text is now “field tested” and should probably be used more with maybe minor tweaks (link to it from the website donate page and the pop up).

Is there any evidence the pop up asking for donation is working as intended? , adding randomness to this could make it too hard to debug.

I think what it does prove beyond all doubt if the pop up is working is that the pop up text is not enough. People want a clear and persuasive rational. underestimation potential donors ability to read a short text could be a costly mistake. a quick googling indicates a optimal length of about 1,000 to 2,500 words while the current text stands at about 500 words.

didn’t even know they have a API. i meant parsing the HTML with something like selenium, there are probably lighter options. if you will do this once a day or week i can’t see why your API should be blocked (its like some developer repeatedly checking that in his browser).

They probably make something like 80 dollar a month of you. maybe a tech support representative just needs to input your IP to their system. it takes a couple of minutes for someone who makes about $20 an hour so not unreasonable . especially if you will warn/threaten them that you will remove patreon.

We had this automated, but patreon blocked our IP, so I’ll update it manually rn, and try to do that at least once a month.

Did you try sending them an email or opening a issue asking them to to whitelist the IP? . this is completely unreasonable. you are a paying customer.

graphtreon is making a ton of requests so i think there should not be a problem. or maybe you could parse graphtreon instead.

You could create a repository with just this data and be liberal when giving out access.

Have you considered a UX similar to old reddit for this? where you hover over the join button with the mouse and it gives you the option to create a feed or add and remove to a feed?

I actually checked multiple times and could not find it (but admittedly maybe that is my mistake and not a real problem with discoverability).

meta makes 156B per year, assuming 3.98B users per year (average monthly active users). that’s about 39$ revenue per user per year and 3.2$ per user per month.

If you want to make that kind of money, i think they only realistic option adding ads with an option to pay to disable the ads. i never saw a open source project raises that kind of money with fundraising. even then i am not sure it will work because i think i read a report that people who block ads basically don’t read them when they can’t block so those ads will make no money.

I am someone who kinda tries to live a more healthy lifestyle, if somebody tells me there is something that is good for my health i expect some scientific research to provide evidence of that. the health industry does provide things that have no scientific evidence that they are effective (so called “big placebo” companies).

iirc they were already listed as goals in previous NLnet grants, so it has already been a while, not mention that Lemmy budget is a drop in the ocean compared to reddit and that money could definitely be used.

Any update on improving Lemmy fundraising process?

KDE recently did a post where they describe the result of adding a notification asking for donations. the money they received from only paypal alone in the 7 days of December is almost 5 times higher (62K) then their biggest previous month (October 13K).

Lemmy donations are down from march to today , while piefed is having a modest organic growth . maybe this could boost development resources bringing features users have been asking for years and improve the speed of experimentation that will help perfect Lemmy’s design and feature set.

I always assumed its daily reporting of monthly active users. the nodeinfo format that is used for reporting the data does not show daily active users iirc (it is seemingly capable of reporting weekly users).

FYI, its not true the 80 percent of users are on lemmy.world see here (total number of active users) and here (number of lemmy.world active users).

Also piefed as far as i know does not really support multireddits , you can’t define a feed of groups of communities as a user. piefed topics are configured by admins or the developers .

fediverse observer works well , why split the efforts? if someone wants to work on this kind of thing he might as well continue developing the-federation . there was an attempt at a rewrite that seemed to have stopped. python is perceived as a better language so that might justify splitting the effort.

For profit incentives are part of what made open source successful, see red hat and Suse. From what i can tell bluesky is open source and could be forked like what happened with nextcloud and lineageos. blockchain has reasonable applications .

We could use something like codeberg for bluesky, a open source community of developers and donors that could balance the for profit entity.
