Why not? The Queen’s Gambit launched it into mainstream, and there are a number of high quality chess YouTubers and Twitch streamers. I think chess has always been something people respect, and now it’s more accessible than ever.

To pair with this, there are new formats that keep things interesting and watchable, from shorter time controls (rapid = 10 min, blitz = 3 min, bullet = 1 min) to chess 960/Fischer random (shuffle back row pieces. Chess engines are also essentially free, so you can analyze your games to improve, without needing a coach or a bunch of books. It’s pretty reasonable to go from knowing nothing about the game to being reasonably good in a few months, you just need to memorize a few openings, do puzzles, and analyze your games to pick up on patterns.

So yeah, chess is having a bit of a moment, and it’s really fun IMO.
