There’s no question that Tesla’s signage and policies should have been made more clear, but the main problem I see here is neither of those things.
The problem here is the aggressive and hostile Tesla owner, who chose to pick a fight and call the cops rather than communicating, or even just minding his own business.
This is really just stereotypical Tesla driver behavior. They are far and above the most entitled drivers in the SF Bay Area.

genuine question: why call the police anyway? say the tesla driver was right and there was no compatibility. what were they thinking the rivian driver is gonna do? worst case scenario is they are gonna realize their mistake and… leave?

I think they were just angry because the Rivian isn’t designed for Supercharging and so was parked sideways across two parking spots.
Tesla should have changed their signs when they opened up their charging network to other brands.

It was actually quite well planned out, opening up the network in stages to see that everything worked as intended before a wide rollout. You can even see in the app which chargers are open to other car brands. This mistake is 100% on the driver, the info is easily available to that person.
Just don’t expect a software company to keep documentation up to date.
I think the sign in the photo still makes sense if you interpret it as “Don’t park here unless you’re using the Tesla charging station.”

I think it’s more like - you’re looking to charge your phone at an airport. You’re a Samsung user and you bought a contract to be able to use special Samsung-provided kiosks, which used to be an exclusive feature for you.
As you look for a charger, you see a dude with an iPhone sitting across 2 of the charge stations. (Maybe there’s only a couple other stations free. Idk from the article). You don’t realize that Samsung recently opened the chargers to iPhone users.
You’re also irritated because it’s been common for people to be assholes and doing things like leaving their phones plugged in and hanging out for hours. Way linger than they need. Or people sitting at the chargers who are just waiting for their planes and not charging at all. So youre sensitive to people you perceived as being assholes and making it harder for Samsung users to use the service they paid for.

Yep. Tesla charging cords are stupidly short, and are designed to force tesla drivers to back into the space for charging, so when you have several tesla charging, the esthetics is better and looks like you’re in a dealership with all the cars uniformly facing out.
I get that there are probably better power delivery perks to a short cord. But this is classic “form over function” design that reeks of Musk.
It is objectively safer to park like that (charging or not). Most parking lot accidents happens as someone leaves the parking spot. The risk of accidents when leaving the parking spot is significantly reduced compared to parking front first.

Backing out of a parking spot is comparatively dangerous, because you can’t see if anyone is approaching from the side.

Specifically, they have to park on the next spot to the right of the charger they are using, as the port on a Rivian is on the left front corner and the Tesla cables are really short. This happens basically on any EV that has the port on anywhere else except the left rear corner, or the front right corner.
Which is most of them, as it seems the standard spot to put it is in front of the drivers (left side) door.
