Trump administration pushing controversial deal to send people to non-home countries, including South Sudan and Eswatini
Seven people have arrived in Rwanda as part of a deal to accept deportees from the US, the Rwandan government has said.
The Trump administration has been negotiating controversial arrangements to send people to third countries, including South Sudan and Eswatini, formerly Swaziland, as part of its wider deportation drive.
“The first group of seven vetted migrants arrived in Rwanda in mid-August … Three of the individuals have expressed a desire to return to their home countries, while four wish to stay and build lives in Rwanda,” Yolande Makolo, a government spokesperson, said on Thursday.
Seven fucking people. I wonder how much money and resources this cost us.
Oh, don’t wait, they’re just building process and then will scale. More to come!
It’s weird to me that countries can just not accept the return of their own citizens in the first place. I’m not saying that it’s acceptable to do these third country deportations, or that the US had tried to send people back to their home country in all cases, but how can a country say their own citizen is not allowed to return? I just read an article about it, but it’s still so strange.
