Weird racist posts from dank memes keeps showing up in my feed. Are we doing anything to prevent becoming Voat 2.0? We’re really concerned about Threads and that’s a big unknown. Weird racists already destroyed the last Reddit escape are we concerned about that? Like are we going to make a policy of defederating hate groups?

I’m pretty confident this community is using fake accounts since every post starts at ~20 and then gets down voted after it’s been forced into a bunch of people’s feed.

If not that’s fine I guess but does anyone have a suggestion for somewhere that will?

Defederation is an important tool in keeping spaces free and safe for all. Instances full of nothing of value such as fascist content tend to be worthless anyway, so defederation makes sense.

Always the best option is to run your own instance. Then you can choose you to federate with or not. In a big instance it’s not easy to force your opinion to others who might not want to defederate.

I think it is ultimately up to each instance to decide how to move forward with such a choice. It seems most instances are doing so democratically. If you don’t like a decision made by your instance admins, move. Simple.

The problem is who decides when an instance contains “nothing of value”? You’re leaving that up to a small handful of admins. You could also encounter a situation where multiple admins collectively decide to defederate from anyone who doesn’t subscribe to the same block list, so any instances who hold different opinions are cut off from loads of content on other instances. We run the risk of splitting the fediverse up into multiple, totally isolated chunks which I don’t think is a good thing on the whole.
