The conditions include one meal a day that consists of a single burrito, some 40 to 90 people at a time crammed into a single room with no beds, and some detainees held as long as seven days with no ability to bathe, according to accounts shared with MSNBC by attorneys and a family member of a person being detained.

“They just give us one burrito with water,” said the immigrant, who already had an active immigration case when he was picked up. His father spent at least six days at the Chantilly ICE office and also was given one burrito per day, and the crowding was so severe that his father had to sleep sitting up at times, the son told MSNBC.

You will never convince me that’s not some overtly racist intentional cruelty.

It’s actually a tactic ICE has used for years. Treat detainees as horrendously as is legal (or worse, if there are no consequences). Most importantly, the entire time ICE will dangle in front of them paperwork that they can sign to consent to deportation without any process.

It’s just a coercion tactic to avoid due process.

It’s partly that I’m sure and also to dehumanize them further. It’s not mentioned in the article but I would imagine they aren’t given silverware and have to eat with their hands. In american culture it is often seen as a lowly/animalistic thing to eat with your hands*. So they can continue to see them as not human because they “don’t eat like one”.

*see the republican reaction to mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani doing so.

What are you talking about? Americans eat with their hands all the time. Sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, pizza, and yes, burritos. I can almost guarantee every one of those ICE agents eats multiple meals a week with their hands. Are you even American?

They’re being abused because they’re being deprived food, not because they aren’t given a cloth napkin and a set of utensils to eat a burrito.

Cognative disonance is a hell of a thing. It’s only ok to eat the “right” things with your hands and I would say most white people would not include burritos in that list. Are we really going to pretend that it hasn’t been a repeated attack on POC that when they eat with their hands it’s “uncivilized”? I’m not saying it’s rational or consistent I’m simply saying it’s a thing I’ve seen people in my personal life do and a thing a congressman got mocked for extremely recently.

Are you American? Because this seems like an America fanfic post rather than someone who has ever existed in American culture.

White people eat burritos. With their hands. That’s like the whole point of a burrito. Someone reaching for a fork and knife to eat a burrito would get ridiculed.

Pretty sure burritos are the quintessential hand food to most people, with the sole exception of like loaded versions where it’s so stuffed with foodstuffs that it would disintegrate in ones hands. We don’t need to point to cultural trends that exist in an exceptionally limited capacity if at all to note that they’re dehumanization people, id agree with you if it was pasta or something but frankly in this case it may just be that they are lazy and don’t want to deal with utensils so they went with a hand food.

Question: are you thinking the kind of burrito served on a plate with sauce over the top and usually rice and beans on the side, or the kind that comes wrapped in foil or plastic that might go through a microwave but which everyone would think you are low-key insane for eating with utensils?

No, I don’t think so. It seems like it’s literally an office where they, in less draconian times, would bring detainees to be processes and then sent on to an actual detention facility. It has “holding rooms” where people would be held until being transferred. Those rooms are bullet proof glass with just a sink and a toilet.

Now, according to the article, the rooms are packed with up to 80 people for a week at a time. They have no access to basic hygiene nor medical care. An internment camp carries the implication that it is built with the intention of holding a large number of people. These are literally just cells in a processing office that is packed full of people who are being treated even more inhumanely (if that’s possible) than those in internment camps.
