Did you read the article? The bots are literally encouraging these kids to take their own lives. Should vulnerable kids/teens just be prohibited from using the bots or should the bots be fixed (or removed until they are)? In what world are we ok with our children having access to trash like that? The lack of accountability is once again my biggest gripe in all of this. Stories like these will continue to take place until openai and meta et al are forced to make major changes or drop their bots. What kind of sociopath releases an app that convinces young people to kill themselves and they’re like “here’s a $100, better luck next time”. Fuck everything about these bots and especially the companies creating them and doing fuck-all about the aftermath of their decisions.

Of course parents who degrade their kids to the state that even a chatbot could convince them to suicide are victims here. It is all chatbots’ fault. Just ban them and everything would be nice until you find something else to blame for your own incompetence.

Plenty of depressed kids with good parents… a child died and you are, with no knowledge, choosing to blame the grieving family. Like just stop reading for a moment and think about that.

It really is not that hard to make it so if a person asks the LLM if/how to kill themselves it just gives the generic break from immersion “suicide is wrong please speak with a mental health professional”
