U.S. health officials say 93 Americans have died after cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic since 2009, with many of the recent deaths involving a procedure known as a Brazilian butt lift.

The operation has grown in popularity recently and has led to deaths in other countries as well, including the U.S. A report issued Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could not say how common these deaths are or whether they are more common in the Dominican Republic.

The report suggests steps that medical tourists should consider before traveling to get work done.

Societal beauty standards and the pressure they put on people is what is really disgusting.

Its been proven that society puts more worth on attractive people. Blaming vanity is to an extent victim blaming. But, that’s not to dismiss vanity completely, because to an extent, I do agree that a fair amount is done by already attractive people out of vanity.

Overall, as someone who has had cosmetic surgery, the boost it gave to my confidence was irreplaceable.

Speaking as someone who has none - getting by without any vanity is super tough. All the myriad decisions you make that are purely for the benefit of others sensing you require vanity as motivation - otherwise, you have to spend willpower on every little thing, and that’s doable, it’s just exhausting.
