If your goal is rehabilitation, driving people insane with sleep deprivation isn’t going to help.

Secondly, think about how irritated and pissy you are when you don’t get enough sleep. Now imagine that in an entire prison population. You’re asking for trouble.

The goal pf US prisons is the continuation of slavery with a heaping side of punishment.

Note that it is frequently named the Department of Corrections, or in this case Criminal Justice, not the Department of Rehabilitation.

      If your goal is rehabilitation

Why would a for profit prison system want to rehabilite anyone?

If the prison population dips below a certain point, they don’t get as much money, it’s literally in most contracts for prison services that the prison must maintain a certain number of prisoners.

The easiest way to keep them full, is to add charges for people already in prison. You do that by making their lives hell and putting them in situations where even a rational person would become stressed and prone to violence.

Even if they get out, they’ll be back.

      Tldr:

The American prison system is designed for the opposite of rehabilitation.

It’s designed to maximize profits, and that means maximizes prisoners.

Not to mention you basically get blacklisted form most jobs for life. If they were not discriminating, they wouldn’t need to check.

Doesn’t even have to be life.

If you can’t get a job in the first couple months out of prison, that’s often a parole violation and you’re going back.

So you take a shit job for minimum wage that isn’t enough to live off, and still need to resort to crime to make ends meet.

Nothing about the system makes productive citizens, because that’s not what makes the system money.

Unfortunately both parties think privatization is the path forward for most of the government
