Can stop reading right there.
Just wanted to clarify, I assume you’re being sarcastic? You believe every Black Lives Matter protest was a violent affair? Because that’s pretty verifiably false. Not to mention, not the crux of this article.
This article is about how the FBI lied in court about its social media monitoring capabilities. If you want to spout off unverified theories about how every protest was violent, you could make your own post/community. You could also try actually contributing to the discussion, but of course you don’t have to.
I went to BLM protests and felt unsafe… because of the right wingers who approached me obviously hoping for violence.
A dozen people dead would say otherwise.
Before you get buried in downvotes, would you care to explain what you meant by that?
An actual screen cap of the mostly peaceful protests.
Cool anecdotal evidence. Here’s hard data with sources:
https://acleddata.com/2021/05/25/a-year-of-racial-justice-protests-key-trends-in-demonstrations-supporting-the-blm-movement/
“Approximately 94% of all pro-BLM demonstrations have been peaceful, with 6% involving reports of violence, clashes with police, vandalism, looting, or other destructive activity.
In the remaining 6%, it is not clear who instigated the violent or destructive activity. While some cases of violence or looting have been provoked by demonstrators, other events have escalated as a result of aggressive government action, intervention from right-wing groups or individual assailants, and car-ramming attacks.”
Exclusive: $1 billion-plus riot damage is most expensive in insurance history
The most damaging riots in history constitutes a bit more than ‘anecdotal evidence’.
Let’s go full circle! According to the FBI (who are known to lie, which was the original intent of the post/article) insurance fraud costs us 40 Billion dollars a year, with other research suggesting much higher.
https://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/insurance-fraud
So the most expensive riots, of which 94% were peaceful, cost about 2.5% ( 1B/40B) of how much conservative estimates think insurance companies lose to fraud every year. But again, if you want to specifically make a post/community about this you are more than welcome to.
Edit: I realize tone is hard to convey over text! I am not trying to diminish the point you are trying to discuss. I just feel like “Lemmyquette” (is that a thing yet?) would suggest it deserving its own article/post. I do think it’s interesting that the 1-2 billion is close to the Rodney King Riots, as sourced in your article. I hope you have a good rest of your evening!
Is that a screencap of every single protest across the country? Because I’m looking at it and it looks like it’s just of one specific place and I don’t think anyone is denying that some of the protests were violent. So I’m not sure how that proves they weren’t mostly peaceful.
