Warning: Elon Musk now has Huffman bending the knee. Whitepeopletwitter, iselondeadyet and loads of other Elon critical subs have been banned or suspended.
Just a warning, Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.
Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.
I think that happened a long time ago
i was gonna ask if op was new to the internet.
like, what does he think we’re all doing here in the first place
Was it really ever a safe place for free speech?
Back before they went “independent,” kind of. When Sears sent legal threats to take down a post exploiting an xss bug to make a joke about grilling babies, reddit had a big public discussion on it, and ultimately left the post up
The simple fact that there is an unnecessary amount of control given to a single person over the information and communication you share and consume automatically makes the environment this person controls an unsafe environment for free speech. Yes, there should be moderation, but it should by moderation by the community, not the person on the top of the unnecessary hierarchy. Centralized social media only serves its owners, it exists for no other reason.
Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.
That ship sailed years ago.
Lol… it never was
Yeah… was the whole Ellen pao thing 10 years ago? There’s been dreams every time a sub is banned for ages.
I don’t blame them for backing the jailbait sub, that was creepy as fuck.
Or coontown.
I forgot about that. Good riddance.
I joined reddit in 2012, back then it was really a free place, It hasn’t been for a while but back then it was.
Removed by mod
Looks like a bunch of incels being pathetic together. If that’s where you’re finding your masculinity you should probably rethink your entire life from the ground up because you took a wrong turn somewhere.
Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech
Friendly reminder of when spez, many years ago, literally just changed a user’s comment, and then went on to not be immediately fired over this insane breach of everything to do with customer relations.
Was that while he was a moderator of /r/jailbait?
Spez is a piece of shit, but wasn’t that a joke? Like other mods added him as a mod?
Excellent point. I’m sure the guy who edited user comments couldn’t have un-modded himself at any given point.
You can only be on a mod team if you are invited and you accept.
That was not always the case, and was only set up that way after the CNN expose. Fuck Spez left, right, and up the middle, but he only was only listed as a mod on /r/jailbait at a time when you could freely add anybody as a mod to your subreddit.
TIL. Thank you.
Wouldn’t that mean that he was likely sent CSAM - and possibly didn’t report it?
That would indicate that there would be no plausible deniability about the trading rings being run by the mods and users.
Reddit would not have removed r/jailbait if it hadn’t made CNN. R/picsofdeadkids was up for long after that.
R/picsofdeadkids was up for long after that.
Not for much longer. Gawker doxxed Violentacrez shortly after, and I believe he shut down all his subs when that happened.
Violentacrez
You mean Michael Brutsch.
At the time you could add someone as a mod without their say so. and apparantly thats what happened with Spez.
Doesn’t change the fact that he didn’t instantly remove himself but left it there for years.
Oh damn I didn’t realize he was a mod for years. I figured it was like a day or something.
He looks like he has cyborg eyes.
The picture is altered
True. The original does not have the text.
Thanks for the chuckle!
It just emphasizes what’s already there.
His teeth are so weird
He was also a competitive ballroom dancer in college. I wish I could find some pictures or videos… Seriously, come on internet, help me out.
What’s wrong with competitive ballroom dancing?
Absolutely nothing.
This is the 1958 Hong Kong Cha Cha champion.
You might know him by the name Bruce Lee.
What the fuck how is this happening without anyone in the US really doing anything
Based on the people I interact with daily basically no one realizes this is happening. Outside of the IT department no one realizes or cares. I asked how we were doing to deal with tariffs on electronics we regularly used a while back and was quietly told that was a political statement and shouldn’t be brought up.
Now we have no plan and I’m too bummed to be smug about it.
Again, this is just my anecdotal view.
Ahh the classic US move, pretend the problem doesn’t exist until it causes massive problems, then blame someone else.
Funny, that’s the exact same vibe I always get from street interviews in Russia.
It’s the same exact playbook, so makes sense
Well you may be jailed or killed if you say the problem does exist. In the US they choose to ignore the problem on their own free will.
It’s been working out for the rich and powerful so far. Why wouldn’t it work for us too?
FAFO
I had this conversation over Christmas with my family. As horrible as everything public is, I’m arguably more worried about how the cyber world. Nothing is private, the info is controlled, and the masses are far too ignorant to have any idea how fucked everything is. I mentioned something about how tik Tok is just a data collection so for China, and I got, “whatever, they already have all of my information”. I can’t then go on to explain why everything is so bad, because nobody knows anything about computers, and the newest generation coming up is arguably worse than boomers, because they’ve only ever know smartphones and tablets.
Half the IT department i work in built new gaming rigs ahead of time. The other half is non-gamers and republicans.
Id be relieved my work hardware is newer and good for a few years, if i wasn’t a federal employee waiting to be fucked over.
Glad to hear you won’t have to upgrade. Hopefully you can stay under the radar, but I definitely get this would be a rough time to be working for the fed. I sincerely wish you luck (and patience)
Bread and circuses. As long as they aren’t starving, and the forth estate only covers media circuses. Not actually reporting. They’ll never know.
Well that and the fact that plenty of folks arent even in the same greater region as DC meaning actions are somewhat limited, hell im 8 hours out from my States Capitol and DC is on the other side of a fucking continent.
If I didn’t have kids to keep safe, maybe, but I can’t take the risk as is.
Just a warning, Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised
Lol.
Lmao even.
Reddit has never been a safe place for free speech.
yes it has, but it was like 15 years ago and absolutely wild
Try 18 years ago, when Aaron Swartz left.
where does the time go
The time didn’t go anywhere, we did.
Into the corners of your eyes and your lower back
It was until they had to delete the canary.
That was over a decade ago though.
What’s that?
We’re overdue for Rexit, round 2.
Nazi boogaloo
If you’re still there, advertise us!
Pick an instance without “lemmy” in the name. Say something like: “Want to check out the fediverse? Go to discuss.online!”
Same here, I wish more people would use lemmy
A reddit thread about this is what actually led me here. Reddit has been on my shit list for a while, it’s cool this place exists.
Non-corporate owned media is going to be the only way to escape the continued enshittification of the internet.
Welcome! Bring your content, enjoy the friendly people :)
And form a positive opinion on Linux man. Just any opinion. They’ll slaughter you without one it’s rough out there
I love my Steam Deck.
And if you don’t have an opinion on linux just reply with “I use arch btw”
Linux bad
We should be going back on there and proselytizing (and on this end, welcoming new users with h links to documentation etc.) btw if you’re new I recommend checking out the various mobile clients. I personally use lemmy sync because of muscle memory from years of using it on reddit, but there’s a number of open source ones too.
I agree. I do worry about the barrier to entry for some people. I know it gets brought up a lot here but I think it’s a valid criticism.
Looking into apps was actually the first thing I did after making an account!
I used Sync for a few minutes, but then settled on Voyager because they don’t collect any data.
Voyager is very nice btw.
spez being a spineless fuckboy? Nooooo.
The resistance will be federated.
Huffman isn’t bending the knee. He’s been deep throating Musk for quite a while. Even before the whole API thing, it was known the he saw Musk as a great role model.
Yeah, Reddit hasn’t been safe in a long time. If people are only just now realizing that, it’s because they’ve been extremely sheltered from… Well… Gestures vaguely at everything
You are correct. I didn’t realize how shit it was until I focused on being more security minded. I ditched almost all centralized social media. I’m working to get rid of Facebook and hopefully google next. That’s going to be hard .
Scary that they banned WhitePeopleTwitter, a sub with 3M+ subscribers.
Embrace our superior locally raised !whitepeopletwitter@sh.itjust.works, or the more inclusive and not twitter-centric !microblogmemes@lemmy.world
As long as it doesn’t share the same trash mods from reddit, sure!
Ironically most of those 3 million are the “right” color to them. Can’t take the heat once you start burning down the kitchen I guess.
Was that even a sub critical of Elon? I haven’t been on Reddit since the API migration, but I remember that sub just being a joke response to BlackPeopleTwitter, which mostly just reposted funny tweets.
Several individuals on that sub were making death threats towards individuals in government. The mods either supported or ignored them, so a temp ban needed to be put in place.
Is Elon Musk actually an “individual in our government” though?
DOGE is an official part of the government, so unfortunately he is.
It’s effectively “Liberal people twitter” with all posts being about politics, especially discussing Musk and Trump. I think it changed around the Covid lockdowns.
It’s not when they were calling for interns of government agencies death. What’s scary is no one here is looking for context.
I’ve been out of the loop with this one. Please, by all means, give some context. Do I read you right that info about elons minions was doxed?
You are not asking in good faith given you chose to address the victims as “elons minions” and not as real people.
I can think they are his minions who are helping him carry out a coup and still condem death threat against them. Why does everything have to be black and white these days?
Anyhow, you are not obligated to answer me. I’ll read into it or won’t, untill then I just won’t have any opinion on this matter.
Edit: And you can be somebody’s minion (as in tool used to aquire your goals) and still be a human. I don’t see that as mutually exclusive.
Plenty of people in this comment section aren’t condemning death threats and are advocating to kill them.
Biases are subtle and the way you address those mentioned leads me to believe you’d completely ignore any information given. Your hesitation to self-inform does the same. Have a nice one.
Bit funny how like two thirds of our conversation happened in your head. What ever. Have a nice one too.
Minions are people…
This one came out of the blue. the API blackout had notice and time to organize. People were talking about reddit alternatives and protesting for weeks before the API blackout happened
I’m back, and my mass got significantly bigger than when I got here before.
Well I’m here
Welcome back! Lemmy’s a decent amount better than it was a year and a half ago :)
Well, we’re a lot angrier because of
The world
Every scandal is a cut where some people bleed over.
I’m not even remotely surprised. Anybody who has been following the history of Reddit will know that their senior management are spineless and will change their stance at a whim when it either hurts their public image or it no longer becomes viable from a business perspective.
We’re forgetting that this is the same site that allowed jailbait, creepshots, racial hatred, right wing propaganda, rampant misogyny, gore videos, terrorist propaganda (if anyone remembers ISIL) and other disgusting content to proliferate until various scandals forced their hand. Spez in particular is a massive snake that will throw people under the bus and lie through his teeth if it benefits him.
But then again, with a government as volatile as this, maybe you don’t want to piss of Trump or Musk…
I don’t want the piss of Elon or Trump. That’s disgusting
Jihadin Action wasn’t ISIL/ISIS/DAESH propaganda. They spread other propaganda too!
The real issue was almost nothing you list was illegal at the time except potentially creepshots as odds are some had to be kids (IDK not my bag- kids or creep stuff). Whereas, specific calls to targeted violence against specific people is an actual crime in the country where reddit is headquartered. I don’t like what they did but it makes sense.
People should get off of reddit because of reasons other than this
I’m referring specifically to the uncut ISIL execution videos that used to be all over r/watchpeopledie years ago.
Gotcha, Jihad in action was press releases from Islamic militant groups about their actions so every bombing, murder, raid etc that anyone announced on twitter was there. It was a huge collection of propaganda.
How do people not expect this of Reddit by now
Reddit has been Facebook since like 2019-2020. Any social media service that gets too big just becomes a complete shit hole, hence my joining the fediverse.
Do you think the up and coming bluesky might end up like that
Without some kind of mechanism to cap off growth, I think any social media service will end up like Facebook. As for the concept of a fediverse here, I think certain instances will definitely turn to shit, but it’s up to the individual instance rules to figure that out.
Also with things like fedi blocks some instances could be isolated and collapse on their own
