A friend on the outside could then use the geolocation data from the analocator and drone deliver supplies at night. The contestants turn the camera off at night and the secret delivery wouldn’t have to be anything overt that would be easily noticeable post-delivery.
Contestants are allowed to bring ten items to the location with them. Part of the show is deciding which items to bring and which items to go without - skipping a fire starter or a water bottle, for example. But this way they could drone deliver a few of those small items they skipped out on.
I’m talking about this show, for anyone unfamiliar: Alone - Wikipedia
Reality TV is a style of presentation, not a type of content. Many of these shows and contests are as scripted as normal dramas, comedies and procedurals - only filmed in a style reminiscent of a documentary.
I would assume that there is some clause in the contract that they will be disqualified if that did happen.
A clause specific to inserting GPS into the anus, sure, but what about other orifices?
Probably a general “don’t put things in your body” rule to catch the people who look for specific orifices in legal language.
“They said I can’t shove it up my anus but my urethra is still legal!”
Or at least “no unapproved outside assistance of any sort”.
Wouldn’t that be more of an inside job?
Ladies and extra brave men have 2 options down there.
I mean, if someone did this and won, it would literally be defrauding the production company for the amount of prize money.
They do regular health check-ins with the contestants, and if you’re not losing weight but there’s no footage of you catching food, they’re going to figure out pretty quickly that something’s up.
On top of that, the locations are chosen so that just hiking out to you with food would be a survival challenge in itself - and coming in by boat would almost certainly be noticed.
Interestingly, I’ve just been binge watching the show for the first time. I’m on season 5 currently.
It’s such a great show. I was thinking more like a ferro rod or a knife, something small that would aid in catching/processing food rather than drone-delivering actual food.
Like if someone wants to bring salt, they have to give up on one of their ten survival items. But this would let them bring the salt and then just follow up via drone for the item they gave up to bring the salt.
I mean - it’s certainly possible, but you’d still be risking that 500k prize if you got caught.
And most people seem to tap out because of loneliness or starvation, so if you were going to cheat, you’d pretty much have to smuggle in either food or a better way of getting it - like a decent fishing rod and proper lures.
You can hide most things in your ass. Is it worth it for 1000 success points?
I’m not sure what success points are, but probably.
1 in 10 doesn’t seem to mind it.
I’ve put things in my ass for no points. 1000 points sure sounds worth it.
I’m pretty sure all of those shows look inside the contestants butts.
For fun and profit
You’d have to surgically implant it somewhere they’d never look. Inside your brain. I mean you’re on a reality show so there’s gotta be plenty of space up there.
While they are left alone the team is not very far away. I think an hour or so by boat. The contestants are not super far from each other as well but the terrain and walking isolates them. Every mile is a workout. Add to this that the only elctronics anywhere near is on the ship and the camera equipment. I guess what im saying is the drone could easily get caught even if small because if its small it has to be launched closer to the person which means a ship that could get caught. If it has to go a far distance it has to be far larger and it can’t blend in to any other electronic/mechanical noise in the area. Lastly they get regular wellness checks which are also inspections so they better damn well hide that shit good.
they better damn we’ll hide that shit good
Back up the ass it goes
I sorta wish they would allow like any tool that meets some standard like under a certain weight and dimensions and can’t be beyond a simple machine and can’t have multiple components in the sense of pulleys or rope. LIke it should cover most multitools or knives or soemthing someone might 3d print. I mean I could not do this show but I often think I would want to bring stuff that is not on the list but simple devices.
If there is no checking in place, like an airport security check and/or check for devices emitting radio waves. Also, the producers know where the candidates are at, don’t they? If they spot regular drone flights in the area, I think the game will be up as well.
You may be surprised to find that GPS signals are quite low power by the time they get to Earth. Receivers employ a bunch of tricks to extract the signal out of noise. It does not take much in the way to attenuate them to the point where they are useless. If a receiver is embedded in a body cavity it is unlikely to work well unless it has a direct full-sky view – which is especially troublesome for that particular body cavity.
It might be easier to embed a tiny receiver in someone’s skin: in their shoulder, or the nape of their neck, with less bodily tissue between them and the sky. A strategically-placed tattoo could help cover it up. The receiver would also need power so you would either need to embed a power source in it (which may be larger than the receiver itself) or work out some RF power source nearby. (But if you didn’t know where in the world they were, how would you know where to place the power source?)
Leave the antenna sticking out a bit and do a handstand
It only needs to be up there until the contestant has a chance to remove it off-camera.
Then that’s more feasible. It also means that it doesn’t have to try to operate while safely stowed. The contestant can remove it and then turn it on. They might even be able to strategically bury it somewhere. The small amount of dirt above it will attenuate the signal, but if buried in a place with an open view of the sky they will get a much stronger signal than they would in a building.
We are spoiled with how quickly the GPS in our phones work, but they already have a good idea where they are from the cell towers, and they can also get information on which satellites are in view from the Internet. If the GPS receiver had to work without access to those resources, it may take minutes to get a fix.
Then, it also has to communicate the position data: if there is no cell service, that would have to be some sort of satellite communication or other long-range thing.
I don’t see why not. It’s obviously cheating, but there are trackers that would easily fit.
Many of the trackers that would easily fit (like AirTags) don’t actually have their own GPS receivers, they piggy-back on the receivers in iPhones that are in bluetooth range (and also use those iPhones for the cell communication back to Apple).
Very good point.
I looked again to see what self-contained satellite devices look like. Some of them will still fit, but not quite as easily.
You might be able to fit in a satellite phone and then have your buddy give you info on your location, what plants to eat, etc. You would have access to vaste amounts of survival knowledge every night.
Drones wouldn’t be realistic as outlined above.
