It will depend entirely on whether he thinks weed being criminalized will put more people who oppose him in prison than he will lose in support from people who smoke weed that support him. Just like Nixon.

    That’s my guess anyway.

You forgot option C) which is part of Fascism 101: selectively enforce the law to prosecute your political opponents, target minorities, and just have something to hang on people in general just in case.

“Coincidentally” that’s how the War on Drugs™ always worked in the US.

Support from the people in power, not the people who voted for you.

It’s not like the regime in East Germany had massive public support.

From being able to use force to stay in power. Again, the regime in East Germany did not have massive public support. Also, in every election in which he ran, Hitler got less than 50%. But he got into power because it was a plurality election.

Once you get into power, you don’t need elections to stay in power when you’re a dictator.

They also didn’t have near instant communication accross the country. It’s also one state, rather than a group of them.

There will be midterms, and politicians will think about them.

Why are you assuming that, or that the midterms won’t be anything but a sham?

I really suggest you read about what dictatorships are like because you don’t seem to be aware.

Trump federally legalized “psychoactive hemp” with the 2018 farm bill.

Still, I’m ready to get Ruby Ridged if the feds come for my plants.

he has been against it, then most recently for legalization… he was most likely lying through his leaky diaper then, so i suspect he’s gonna flip back no legalization, no reclassification, aggressive targeted enforcement, and trying to screw up states’ own legalization efforts.

his accomplices have been working on stopping the reclassification already.

You mean the plans to put it on the same classification level as heroin ketamine and lysergic acid*? A change Biden and the Dem establishment had 4 years to make?

It’s already schedule I, the same as heroin.

The Biden admin’s plan, which is in progress and is being held up by the DEA who have been told many times over the years to reschedule cannabis, is to put it at schedule III, which would be the same as, say, ketamine. Able to be prescribed, able to be researched.

I stand corrected, yet this hardly discounts any of my concerns about Biden’s prior level of commitment.
